U.S. CPSC Updates Safety Standards for Toddler Beds (16 CFR 1217)
Vol. 1539 | 20 May 2026
The U.S. CPSC has updated the mandatory safety standard for toddler beds by incorporating ASTM F1821-26. The revision makes mostly editorial clarifications, aligns the introduction with the standard’s scope, and maintains the existing safety, performance, and labelling requirements.
On May 14, 2026, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) published a direct final rule in the Federal Register to update the mandatory safety standard for toddler beds (16 CFR 1217).
The new rule officially incorporates the most recent voluntary standard, ASTM F1821-26, replacing the previous 2019 version. The new version of the standard added explicit wording to align the standard's introduction with its scope regarding how children actually interact with products, and made other minor editorial adjustments. The changes do not affect the requirements and testing methods much.
The requirements of ASTM F1821-26 include General Requirements, Performance Requirements and Labelling Requirements. While many of the changes in the 2026 revision are editorial, CPSC clarify the standard without reducing the stringent safety requirements already in place.
The rule is scheduled to take effect on August 29, 2026.
